Trail
Coal Creek Trail
The 14-mile soft-surface regional trail along Coal Creek from Superior through Louisville and Lafayette to Erie, 3.3 miles of it in Lafayette, with trailheads at South Public Road and Flagg Park. Open to walkers, bikes and leashed dogs.
Boulder County’s Coal Creek Trail parallels the creek for 14 miles, rated easy, from 66th Street in Superior through Louisville and Lafayette to Vista Parkway in Erie; the City’s own trail page counts 3.3 miles inside Lafayette, where it joins the Rock Creek Trail in a regional system of more than 14 miles. The surface is soft. Pedestrians, bicyclists and dogs are allowed; horses are not on most of it. The county’s regional trails are open to commuters around the clock, but trailheads close at sunset and parking is not allowed overnight.
In Lafayette the trailheads are South Public Road (9 car spaces) and Flagg Park (18 cars, an accessible space, two horse-trailer spaces and the only permanent restroom). A section near the City’s water reclamation facility closed on September 8, 2026 for about eight weeks of floodplain and retaining-wall work, with a detour part of which is ungroomed; check the City’s ConeZone map before riding. The county’s page also warns of heavy equipment crossing near the Flagg Park junction from October 26 to November 6, with flaggers on site. The City’s Open Space program leads walks here from Elysian Field Drive, next on November 14 and December 13.
